Think of some of your favorite bands (if youre here, then you know). However these bands sound, chances are that they wouldnt have had the courage to even try sounding that way had it not been for this band. But for Siouxsie and the Banshees, we may never have had a Joy Division, Cure, Smiths, Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey, Radiohead--and even if we did, these bands simply wouldnt have sounded the same, wouldnt have had the balls to experiment to the degree that they have. Whatever it was, the Banshees did it first; they were there from the very beginning. If you look closely enough at the footage of the Sex Pistols on the Bill Grundy show (you can YouTube it), youll see a young Siouxsie Sioux standing there alongside other members of the "Bromley Contingent." Sid Vicious, believe it or not, actually played drums at the first ever Banshees gig, a complete mess by all accounts; but within two years, the Banshees would release their first single, "Hong Kong Garden," which we all love, and it only got better from there. Like the Pogues, the Banshees punk rock roots run deep; and though those roots can be heard all through the catalogue--from The Scream all the way up through The Rapture--the Banshees are better known (along with bands like PiL and Wire and Gang of Four, et al) for inventing"post-punk": discordant, yet rhythmic, sonic experimentation--nothing less than a new way of making music.
Now, feast your hungry eyes on this: original vintage promo tee for Once Upon a Time/The Singles, 1981.Im literally the second owner, and the first treated this thing like a newborn baby. Look at how pristine the tag is: probably been worn and washed a couple of times and then stored, preciously, in a cool, dry place for decades. The colors still pop, the fit and feel are absolutely to die for (see pics). Its a large Screen Stars, the slim_punk standard, doesnt get any better, soft as all get out. "Hong Kong Garden," "Love in a Void," "Christine"--so many of the greats, truly one of our most prized compilations by one of our most beloved bands. Unprecedentedly dope!
