• Chicago DJ Al Benson started Parrot Records and its subsidiary Blue Lake Records in 1952, concentrating mainly on blues and R&B, but also recording jazz and gospel sides, and as the doo wop era hit, several vocal groups as well. Most of the Parrot sides were leased to Chess Records Checker Records imprint, but Benson retained the right to issue parallel Parrot versions in the Chicago area, which has made the original Parrot issues highly collectable. Benson folded the label in 1956, and much of the catalog passed over to Chess a few years later. This short set compiles some of the doo wop material Benson recorded -- most of which was extremely well produced and arranged -- including the Orchids "Youre Everything to Me," the Five Thrills "Gloria," and the Pelicans "Aurelia," with its wonderfully subtle sax and electric guitar textures. Things are on the brief side here, but as a quick introduction to the high-quality vocal groups Parrot offered, this set is definitely worth a look. ~ Steve Leggett
