Legendary blues and rock singer Janis Joplin first rose to stardom as the lead singer for San Francisco psychedelic band Big Brother & The Holding Company and maintained prominence later as a solo artist with her backing groups, The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band. Joplin redefined the role of women in music with her signature bluesy wail and electrifying stage presence, providing some of the most emotionally charged performances of her era.
The Classic LP Collection box set features Janis Joplins 4 celebrated classic albums - Big Brother and the Holding Companys self-titled debut and Cheap Thrills and her solo albums I Got Dem Ol Kozmic Blues Again Mama! and Pearl - all on 180g vinyl! Each album has been sourced from the original masters and album jackets have been meticulously recreated from the original art.
Big Brother and the Holding Companys self-titled album was their debut released in 1967. The album peaked at #60 and almost produced a top 40 hit with Joplins song "Down On Me".
A year after Big Brothers self-titled debut, they released their second album Cheap Thrills which became a massive hit and included the hit song "Piece Of My Heart".
Joplins "I Got Dem Ol Kozmic Blues Again Mama!" was released in 1969 and was her first solo studio album after leaving Big Brother and the Holding Company. The album was released on September 11, 1969 and reached gold record status within two months of its release.
Pearl was Janis fourth album and was release posthumously in January 1971.The album, recorded with the Full Tilt Boogie Band, rose to #1 on the Billboard 200 and remained there for nine weeks.

WHAT IS A JAPAN "MINI REPLICA-LP-SLEEVE" CD?
Have you ever lamented the loss of one of the 20th Centurys great art forms, the 12" vinyl LP jacket? Then "mini-LP-sleeve" CDs may be for you.
Mini-sleeve CDs are manufactured in Japan under license. The disc is packaged inside a 135MM X 135MM cardboard precision-miniature replica of the original classic vinyl-LP album. Also, anything contained in the original LP, such as gatefolds, booklets, lyric sheets, posters, printed LP sleeves, stickers, embosses, special LP cover paper/inks/textures and/or die cuts, are precisely replicated and included. An English-language lyric sheet is always included, even if the original LP did not have printed lyrics.
Then, theres the sonic quality: Mini-sleeves have dedicated remastering (20-Bit, 24-Bit, DSD, K2/K2HD, and/or HDCD), and can often be superior to the audio on the same title anywhere else in the world. There also may be bonus tracks unavailable elsewhere.
Each Japan mini-sleeve has an "obi" ("oh-bee"), a removable Japan-language promotional strip. The obi lists the Japan street date of that particular release, the catalog number, the mastering info, and often the original albums release date. Bonus tracks are only listed on the obi, maintaining the integrity of the original LP artwork. The obis are collectable, and should not be discarded.

PEARL - Fans of Janis Joplin, that very soulful singer who tragically died at the height of her fame but who always gave her all in every performance, are in for a real treat here. This version of her hit album comes in a mini-lp replica sleeve design that has been very well put together with good quality thick cardboard that will hold together very well for a long time and is one of the best mlps designs that Ive seen.
Most importantly, the sound quality is great and also get 4 extra tracks: Tell Mama (live), Little Girl Blue (live), Try (Just a Little Bit Harder) (live) and Cry Baby (live). The live tracks are very good because they show you just how powerful a performer Janis was and her live act must have been some kinda experience judging from the audience reactions on the recordings. Janis was a one-off and no one sounded like her way back then and no one has since. Recommended for fans of great blue-eyed soulful blues performed as if theres no tomorrow.

Janis Joplins PEARL, from 1971, is a bluesy, organ-drenched benediction for the flower-child sound of the free-and-easy 60s. It is also one of great singers most consistent and representative efforts. Gone are the ear-shattering sonics of Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Full Tilt Boogie, the backing band here, steps in to offer a degree of polish and control that frames Joplins vocals nicely. Yet the band still grooves hard with the fierceness her voice demands. Guitarist John Tills riffs, chords, and solos, in particular, are exciting and tightly executed."A Woman Left Lonely" and Bobby Womacks "Trust Me" are rain-on-the-windows ballads that come alive with Joplins gritty vocal brilliance, while the burbling "Move Over" and "Half Moon" are among her funkiest, most driving cuts. The dramatic "Cry Baby" is offset by the tongue-in-cheek a cappella number "Mercedes Benz," while Joplins version of Kris Kristoffersons "Me and Bobby McGee" went on to become her signature song. Joplin died during the sessions for PEARL, making these tracks the final word on her towering talent and a superb addition to her enduring legacy.

Six months before becoming an overnight sensation following a blistering set at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, Big Brother was an unknown group from San Francisco playing a month-long Chicago club engagement. The band, made up of bassist Peter Albin, drummer David Getz, and guitarists James Gurley and Sam Andrew, was completed when the quartet was introduced to singer Janis Joplin by mutual friend Chet Helms.When their gig was cut short, Big Brother avoided returning to California when Bob Shad signed the group to Mainstream Records, his small, struggling jazz label. The three-day recording session in December 1966 resulted in a set of mostly original songs, with the exception of New York City street musician Moondogs "All Is Loneliness" and a more secular arrangement of the gospel standard "Down on Me." Despite Joplins fiery singing style, Big Brother was still the kind of democracy in which Joplin shared vocals with Sam Andrew on the trippy "Light Is Faster Than Sound" and the more soulful duet "Call on Me." But most of this record featured Joplin reaching back and channeling her hero Big Maybelle on songs like the brassy "Women Is Losers" and the no-nonsense "Intruder

KOZMIC BLUES officially marks the start of Janis Joplins solo career, using Stax-Volt-style horn arrangements and a backing band including guitarist Sam Andrew, who she brought along from Big Brother And The Holding Company. While the band proves to be mightily up to its task, Joplins tortured, insistent, blues-soaked performances leave little doubt as to whos in charge here.With her whisper-to-a-roar dynamics and multi-octave range, Janis and The Kozmic Blues Band bury listeners in the soul blues. Her take on the Gibb Brothers "To Love Somebody" is impossibly funky. If she needs to make sure her man loves her enough, shell "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)" to let him know how she feels. While whooping it up at a wild, happening party, she enjoys all the fun but is really just looking for "One Good Man." Not many of the numerous Janis imitators in the US gained much notoriety, but its certain that over in England, one Robert Plant was paying close attention.

No-one packages a CD album quite like the Japanese. Known as a culture for elaborate and excessive packaging, their approach to the CD album is no exception. From the visual delights of the artwork and packaging, to the content itself, you will without doubt get your moneys worth here. The inclusion of the famous obi-strip not only adds a uniquely intriguing aspect, but is also a great marketing tool for the Japanese labels. The term obi-strip is derived from the name of the piece of wide fabric - the obi - that a geisha woman wears around her waist over the traditional Kimono dress. An amazing amount of information is packed onto this little wraparound piece of paper, often noting special tracks, concert dates, discography information and release anniversaries. And, as this information is intended to be read in the home market, it’s all printed in Japanese kanji and ~kana script! Whilst they are safely sealed on new release CD’s they are often discarded once opened, so they should be considered a real bonus when intact on out-of-print CD’s.
In recent years we have seen the obi-strip occasionally replaced with a sleeve sticker, no less attractive and equally unique to the Japanese pressing. Japanese CD albums often benefit from extra music and new video-style content, to further entice the Japanese public to buy their native release and not an import. Non-album tracks and exclusive mixes often feature and there are a huge amount of Japan-Only releases that do not have an equivalent release elsewhere in the world. Japanese pressings will nearly always include a lyric booklet or fold-out lyric sheet. These are dual-language, printed in both the ~kana script and in English, the latter often having some wonderful mis-translations!
